Guide to an Unforgettable Eco-friendly Honeymoon in Costa Rica

As more people heartily adopt a greener lifestyle, choices are going beyond recycling and reusing: curbing carbon-emissions when travelling and making sensible choices abroad are all becoming part and parcel of our sustainable dream. If we all do things just a little better, and a little greener, we’ll be able to enjoy living in this magnificent planet of ours for much, much longer.

Eco-friendly honeymoons are the latest trend to hit the tourism scene and, as far as we’re concerned, it’s one of the most worthwhile ‘fads’ that’s ever been concocted. Costa Rica being one of the world’s foremost eco-tourism destinations is naturally at the forefront of most people’s minds, the sheer number of sustainable tourism initiatives, lodges and activities offering adventure-seekers plenty of guilt-free pleasures.

What is an eco-friendly honeymoon?

Adventure honeymoons are nothing new yet eco-honeymoons take the journey one step further: this is about having the absolute thrill of a lifetime, in pristine nature, whilst leaving as minimal a footprint as possible. In essence, it is to honeymoon responsibly in a stunning place, where your visit directly benefits the wellbeing of the local population and helps protect the environment.

Here are a few ways you can plan your own eco-friendly honeymoon in Costa Rica:

Eco-lodges and eco-resorts abound in Costa Rica: go small and go local

Costa Rica boasts a variety of accommodation options and this includes oversized all-inclusive resorts that can take over entire towns. Although there are certainly benefits to larger resorts (which hire many locals and buy large quantities of local produce) mega-resorts can also place a great amount of stress on the local environment. Moreover, they can also afford to offer greater saving (given the sheer number of rooms) so they tend to make local lodges less competitive, and that’s the biggest downfall of all. Some are also foreign-owned, which means the largest chunk of profits is taken out of the country.

Smaller, family-owned eco-friendly lodges abound in this amazing country, many of them constructed in a section of private wilderness reserve. They’re usually built of sustainable material, are totally self-sufficient and place very little stress on the environment, bar their initial construction. The kind of sustainable practices smaller lodges can implement are simply not sustainable on a very large scale and, besides, they also help spread tourist crowds over a much larger area.

The benefits of impact-spreading are several and are easy to understand this is imagining a lone beach crammed with 500 tourists looking out for nesting turtles, versus 50 separate beaches, each with only 10 spectators. A lone beach can absorb the impact of 10 visitors with ease whilst no beach can cope with 500. ‘Spreading out the love’ is better for the environment and its endemic wildlife, as was made obvious during the overcrowding events of 2015.

Keep your travels to a minimum, once you arrive

On an eco-friendly honeymoon to Costa Rica, you’ll want the emphasis to be on the wilderness, so you may want to choose to stay near one of the major national parks or wildlife reserves. A very effective sustainable option is to minimize your carbon emissions by choosing to explore one region thoroughly, rather than visiting several regions and driving or flying between them.

Plan an all-in-one destination wedding and honeymoon vacation

Destinations weddings have been popular in Costa Rica for years and, for very obvious reasons, it’s a great option to extend the vacation to include an adventure honeymoon whilst here, rather than fly somewhere else. Not only is this a brilliant way to cut costs but it also greatly reduces your carbon emission and that of your closest friends and family members, as many will coincide their yearly vacation to fit in with your impending nuptials. An all-in-one deal for you and the environment!

Offset your carbon footprint before you fly to Costa Rica

Air-travel has been recognized as a huge contributor to climate change but your Costa Rica honeymoon need not be riddled with guilt if you offset that amount of carbon emission you just can’t help create. Aside from these 20 Ways to Offset Your Carbon Emission, you can calculate your trips’ carbon expense and purchase carbon offset credits from an accredited provider. You’ll find all the details in the link.

Costa Rica’s proximity and short flight-times are another great reason to choose this as your eco-friendly honeymoon destination. Rather than taking a long-haul flight, you could be in a matter of a few hours, not only avoiding jetlag but also reducing your overall travel footprints.

When in Costa Rica, eat only locally produced food

The longer an ingredient has to travel, the larger the carbon emission so it figures that eating local food is about the best decision you could make on your Costa Rica honeymoon. Luckily, Costa Rica is a truly delicious destination, with an abundance of fresh produce grown in just about every region. You’ll certainly find imported goods in all major cities and tourist center but if you avoid the imported goods, you’ll help entice local shopkeepers to only stock and serve local fare.

Eating local, in Costa Rica, is anything but boring.  Scour our culinary archives for fantastic gastronomic inspiration.

Shop wisely – the most sustainable souvenirs to bring home

Yes, it’s lovely to bring home ‘only memories’ but, sometimes, we want something a little more tangible. Eco-friendly choices include local produce (vacuum packed for travel), wooden artefacts (made of sustainable materials, of course) and anything that is hand-carved, hand-weaved and hand-made. Steering clear of mass-produced gear in large-scale markets and buying treasures directly from the artisan will ensure your souvenir is made locally. Find more tips here.

market

Think small: sometimes, small gestures can have the biggest impact

Packing a few cloth shopping bags will help you avoid the ubiquitous plastic bags that seem to be the bane of our planet. Not all destinations in Costa Rica have great recycling facility so leaving packaging behind isn’t necessarily helping the environment – that’s just leaving more rubbish behind. What would help is if you had a few bags of your own to store fruit, souvenirs and whatever else you buy along the way, thus avoiding having to collect an unmentionable number of plastic bags. It’s also worthwhile to bring your own water bottle: tap water may be unsafe to drink in many places but most lodges and hotels will have filtered taps from where you can refill your daily stash.

When honeymooning in Costa Rica – buy less, do more

Aside from sustainable souvenirs, there’s probably no need to pack your suitcase with stuff you neither need nor will ever use, so why not spend your time (and holiday funds) on immersive experiences instead? Costa Rica is home to amazing sustainable farms and wildlife refuges that are open to the public and they gift unique experiences. You can get a behind-the-scenes look at local organic farming and enjoy up-close animal encounters, all the while directly helping local business owners trying to do right by their land and wildlife – a real win-win. Moreover, you can enjoy a plethora of stunning adventures in nature, be it ziplining, whitewater rafting, kayaking, horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking and more – all sustainable activities that promote the country as a superb adventure destination but aren’t causing overwhelming stress on the environment. This is particularly true of more remote locations, away from the most visited hubs like Manuel Antonio and Arenal.

bird

Take guided tours – learning is part of the eco-tourism movement

Many consider ‘learning’ part and parcel of eco-tourism: alongside fun and adventure, there needs to be some kind of enlightenment to make the whole trip worthwhile. Education is key in sustainable tourism because only through a spread of awareness can issue be tackled, head-on. The latest disastrous fires in the Amazon, and the ensuing backlash, have been an excellent example of this: speak out and loud and we’ll collectively force governments to act to protect our planet!

Choosing guided tours means you’ll learn a whole lot more about the places and people you meet than you otherwise would, were you to travel independently. Moreover, you’ll have access to a host of off-the-path destinations, events, cultural experiences and culinary discoveries thanks to your local contact. This is why those farm and wildlife refuges are important to visit, not only rewarding: you won’t just see attractions but you’ll learn so much about them too.

Why choose Costs Rica Rios?

We get frustrated and disappointed by greenwashing as much as everyone else and have seen, first-hand, how so many enterprises have no sustainable practices to show for all their flamboyant claims.

At Costa Rica Rios, we have always been committed to sustainable eco-tourism, before the whole ‘trend’ ever took off. We operate our business out of Turrialba (away from the most visited and developed region of the country), only purchase produce from local growers and help support the local recycling efforts, which are quite impressive in their own rights. We also employ local guides and only use lodges and hotels with proven track-records of sustainable practices. We also understand that, sometimes, it’s about the little things: the biodegradable soap to launder our gear, the recycled paper in our offices and the obsessiveness with which we clear our picnic sites on each and every excursion.

At the end of the day, we appreciate that a single person (or agency) will not change the world but, together, we have a shot at protecting its future. Every sustainable choice will help us all get there.

Bespoke Family Vacations in Costa Rica – Adventure with Peace of Mind

In desperate need of a family vacation? We hear you! We also understand the hesitation many families are feeling, right now, when it comes to travel.

To adventure or not to adventure?!

Well, a family adventure vacation in Costa Rica is always the answer, of course, although planning a trip that’ll give you thrills, relaxation, quality time and peace of mind in COVID times may seem a bit more challenging.

But it needn’t be.

Private & Bespoke Family Adventure Vacations – What Are They All About?

At Costa Rica Rios, we’ve loved nothing more than to bring people together, from all walks of life and every corner of the planet, to enjoy a mind-blowing adventure together in the wilds of Costa Rica. Yet given the current pandemic we’re all living with, and the various travel restrictions and social distancing requirements, we’ve had to shelf our group package tours. At least for a little while, until our planet heals.

Instead, we’ve intensified the experiences we love best and created a bevy of bespoke, private family adventure itineraries.

When you travel solely with your family, you keep your social bubble mostly intact and, right now, this is the best way to ensure an adventure with peace of mind. Plus, you are placed squarely at the wheel, which means we plan an itinerary that’s tailor-made for you: your desires, levels of activity, children’s ages and vacation budget.

With private ground transfers and private guides ready to show you the time of your life, and striving to keep you as safe as can be, there’s simply no reason to miss out on all the fun.

Plan Your Trip

Costa Rica Is Open For Family Adventure Vacations!

As of September, Costa Rica will be welcoming back tourists with open arms. Citizens of various countries will be allowed to enter, as well as residents from (so far) 11 US states, namely:

  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Maine
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • New York
  • New Jersey
  • New Hampshire
  • Pennsylvania
  • Vermont / Virginia
  • District of Columbia

Although any new chance to travel is an exciting prospect, you’ll no doubt have many questions in regards to family adventures in Costa Rica. We’ve surprised potential guests these last weeks, who were astonished to learn that, in Costa Rica:

  • adventure activities are available,
  • national parks are open,
  • eco-lodges are operational and
  • restrictions are few and far between

Costa Rica has been implementing openings since May and, in effect, never enforced a complete, country-wide lockdown. The localized restrictions we’re seeing other countries adopt now, Costa Rica has been doing since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic – which means that restrictions in the various cantons have been ebbing and flowing.

Here’s why Costa Rica has been winning plaudits for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On bespoke family adventure vacations, we have the freedom to redirect you to the safest and least-affected areas, so you won’t suffer any restrictions once you arrive. All our national parks have reopened and, given tourist crowds are at a minimum, they are all blissfully uncrowded.

You may want to steer clear of all-inclusive mega-resorts, mind you, but that’s not what we offer here at Costa Rica Rios anyway. To really immerse yourself in nature and soak up the essence of the country, we’ve always preferred smaller, family-run lodges, the kind that are nestled in pristine jungles, teeming with wildlife. Kids love waking up to howling monkeys and protecting their breakfasts from pesky exotic birds. They cherish space, nature, animals and thrilling adventures like kayaking, rafting, ziplining, ATV riding and horseback riding.

Most of all, they cherish quality family time, in peace and quiet and an overcrowded, oversized resort simply can’t deliver the same level of family intimacy.

How to Plan a Costa Rica Adventure Honeymoon in COVID-times

As Costa Rica announced it will reopen its borders to tourists from September (see the latest reopening updates) we’ve been fielding endless questions from couples who’ve had to postpone their adventure honeymoon vacation due to the COVID pandemic. As luck would have it, we’re actually heading into the perfect adventure months here, at Costa Rica Rios – September is when our whitewater rafting and kayaking tours usually take off, a time when we indulge in wild river action after two months of copious rains.

In September 2020, thanks to the you-know-what-pandemic, we’re having to re-plan many of our tours and, to satisfy government regulations and keep all out precious guests and guides safe, are currently only offering private and bespoke tours for honeymooning couples and families – or groups of friends traveling within their own social bubble.

Adventure-seeking couples will undoubtedly be the least affected of all our guests. Our honeymoon tours, by their very nature, are all about romance, adventure, fun, exclusivity and utterly amazing experiences – usually taken in remote areas and staying in cozy lodges, well away from tourist crowds.

Our adventure honeymoons, in essence, are always private & bespoke so planning your visit with us in COVID times isn’t going to be any more difficult!

Here’s the where, what and how of planning your bespoke adventure honeymoons in Costa Rica during COVID-times.

WHERE can you enjoy safe adventure honeymoons in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica has reopened all of its national parks with restricted visitor numbers (down 50%) which means as long as you plan ahead and book your visit with us, you’ll get all the spoils minus all the crowds. It’s really a win-win.

Right now, honeymoon adventures around the Arenal and Manuel Antonio National Parks are proving to be immensely popular. These are usually the two most-visited national parks in the country and 2020 offers the unrivaled chance to experience them in relative solitude.

For couples who wish to be totally immersed in pristine wilderness, and have the adventure of a lifetime, we can plan Off-the-Beaten-Path Honeymoons that include the wildlife-enriched Osa Peninsula. This kind of itinerary delivers the best adrenaline-thrills, coupled with exquisite tropical glamping in one of two of the most distinctive jungle lodges in the country.

For the ultimate adventure and an itinerary chock-full of exhilarating activities, we can also plan adventure honeymoons that include Turrialba, our favorite base for river-based exploits. There’s simply no better place for extreme canyoning, whitewater rafting and kayaking,

This is just a taste of all we can offer: see our complete range of adventure honeymoons in Costa Rica for more itinerary inspiration.

…and just about every other super fun outdoor activity you can think of!

We usually fill every single day of our adventure vacation packages with a mind-boggling abundance of all the above-mentioned activities, given our guests want to squeeze every exhilarating moment out of their Costa Rica visit. On our adventure honeymoon itineraries, however, we are mindful to include a little more ‘downtime’, just so couples can enjoy the gorgeous lodges, startling beaches and indulgent spas.

The Best and Safest Destinations for Costa Rica Adventure Vacations

The latest news out of Costa Rica is that, from September, residents from several US residents will be welcomed to visit, adding to an ever-growing list of permitted visitors. You can get more details on our COVID Update – Costa Rica to Welcome Back US Tourists blog. Given you’re probably busting to start planning your thrill-filled adventures in our beautiful country, we thought we’d update you on the best and safest destinations you can visit.

But first…

What have we been up to, at Costa Rica Rios?

All of Costa Rica’s national parks reopened at 50% capacity on the 1st June and we have enjoyed an increase in travel-freedoms ever since. The first COVID-19 wave was held at bay due to swift government action and although some cantons are experiencing a slight increase in infections right now, due to greater movement of people, there’s nothing to suggest it cannot be controlled. In fact, the latest border reopening measures are testament to the Government’s handling of the pandemic: Costa Rica still rates among the best pandemic responders in all of Latin America.

On our end, we have endured the lockdown as best we could, along with everybody else. Of course, it has been heartbreaking to have essentially missed the height of the 2020 tourist season (December to April are traditionally peak travel season here) but we’re simply ecstatic to be allowed to start adventure tours again in September.

For now, we’re concentrating our efforts on tailor-made adventures for couples, families and anyone traveling with their own private social bubble. Our Build-Your-Own Adventure Packages are not just the safest way to experience Costa Rica, right now, but they offer the enviable chance to plan everything exactly as you want it without the need to share your spoils with anyone else. You can choose the destination, the activities, the pace and the level of luxury you desire, how much contact you’d like with others (include village visits or stay solely in stunning remote lodges) and will have the benefit of private transport and your own private guides. Private tours are a no-brainer in 2020-2021 and, given we plan your trip based on your budget, they also don’t need to be more expensive than organized group tours.

If that’s not all, we have the best destinations of Costa Rica at our doorstep! Now is the time to hone in on all those magical spots that are world-famous and normally chock-full of tourists. Visit Costa Rica from September, 2020, and you can include a visit to the big-name attractions and feel like you have them all to yourself.

Ain’t that grand?

The Best and Safest Destinations for Costa Rica Adventure Vacations

Outdoor activities are allowed all over the country and there are no isolation restrictions for residents from permitted countries/US States, which means once you land and clear customs, you can get out and start your adventure, pronto! We’ll be right there to pick you up and safely guide you through your long-awaited, adrenaline-packed journey.

Here are our suggestions for amazing adventures:

couple

Turrialba, Cartago Province

Our main base for whitewater adventures, Turrialba is a small and charming village nestled in the Central Valley and is a phenomenal base-point for outdoor adventures like kayaking, rafting and mountain biking. We normally run many of our tours from here because it’s not as crowded as more famous hot-spots so we can offers our guests a truly immersive Costa Rica wilderness experience. Only an hour or so out of the capital, San Jose, Turrialba is also home to a handful of glorious eco-lodges: small, familial and inviting places that ensure you won’t ever need to dodge big crowds.

Famous all over the world, the Pacuare River flows right next to Turrialba and it’s here that adrenaline-junkies can get their ultimate fix. We’re talking world-class whitewater rafting and kayaking here! If you’ve never tried either sport before and simply wish to learn and have an absolute ball, then we’ll guide you down the Pejibaye River instead, which offers Grade II and III rapids that are ideal for novice water-sport enthusiasts.

The truly amazing thing about Turrialba is that you can stay put in one lodge and take day-adventures or, better still, pack up for a multi-day watersport trip down the river, stopping each night in remote lodge camps so you can explore surrounding jungles, spot wildlife, swing on a hammock, tackle a thrilling zipline and count all your lucky stars. You can add some mountain biking and canyoning adventures, as well as a sweet snorkel expedition on a remote Caribbean beach. The options are so many from Turrialba and that’s why we love the place so much!

Take a look at this Turrialba itinerary suggestion.

Arenal Volcano National Park

Arenal is the Costa Rica of postcards: that one arresting peak, and park, that everyone wants to see on their first-ever visit. The only issue with Arenal is that, at the height of tourist season, it can get insanely busy. Now, we’re normally super apt at planning visits to dodge the crowds but, this year, we won’t even have to. This is the best year to visit the most famous sights in the country so if Arenal has been on your wish-list forever, now’s the time to make your move.

Take a hike in this jewel of wilderness with a naturalist guide and you’ll find the place will come alive, right before your eyes. There’s a ton of fun stuff to do from here: take a 2-hr walk along a series of breathtaking suspended bridges, right in the heart of the luscious jungle; hike as close as you can to that eye-popping volcano crater, rappel down show-stopping waterfalls, whitewater raft down the exhilarating Sarapiqui River or take a slower paddle down the Penas Blancas River, keeping an eye out for sloths, monkeys and a flurry of exotic, colorful birds. And that’s just the start!

There’s a reason Arenal Activities are among the most-coveted in all of Costa Rica – get here before the big tourist crowds return.

Here’s how we combine adventure and romance in Arenal, on our Luxury Honeymoon tours.

Manuel Antonio National Park

The wildlife hub of western Costa Rica, Manuel Antonio is a splendid place to get totally lost in nature. Cascading right into the Pacific, with its startling rainforest and even more startling beaches, Manuel Antonio is the perfect one-stop wonder. The park truly has a little of everything that makes Costa Rica so famous: the animals, the scenery, the jungles, the peaks and all those powdery sandy beaches that just scream tropical paradise.

Rated one of the world’s most beautiful national parks, Manuel Antonio’s treasure is that it’s small and compact so the eye-popping experiences are intense. Over 100 species of mammals call this place home, as well as almost 200 distinct species of exotic birds. Normally, the park is closed on Mondays and has daily number restrictions in place. This is the one place that can feel crowded so don’t miss your chance to experience this gem of a place whilst visitor numbers are still so low.

Wildlife lovers will have a field day at Manuel Antonio, spotting sloth, squirrel and white-faced monkeys, iguanas, toucans, coatis (and so much more) meandering one of the four hiking trails that traverse the park. Beach-bums won’t know which beach to visit first: all of them framed by pristine wilderness and all of them magnificent.

Learn more about the magic of Manuel Antonio and see how many thrilling adventure sports you can do from here. You can also follow our Best of Both Worlds itinerary to see how easily you can include adrenaline-pumping activities with the stellar delights of the jungle and beaches of Manuel Antonio.

Corcovado National Park, Osa Peninsula

The remote and unspoiled Osa Peninsula is the ideal hub if you want to take your social distancing game up a notch or two. Wild, isolated and resplendent beyond words, the Osa is home to the last remaining tropical lowland rainforest in Central America, and an astonishing amount of unique wildlife. Here, in the heart of the Corcovado National Park, it’s all about amazing animals in their natural, raw surroundings and an adventure in this incredible corner of Costa Rica is, for many, a life-changing experience.

Just a few select remote Corcovado eco-lodges offer you the chance to experience and explore this extreme wilderness region in absolute comfort and luxury. This off-the-beaten-path haven takes some effort to reach but, once there, you’ll never want to leave. Lodges only accessible by boat, amazing culinary experience, wellness treats and days spent hiking and taking river trips – everything about Corcovado will restore your soul.

For active explorers, the options are nearly endless. On the Osa Peninsula, you can go SCUBA diving and snorkeling as well as kayaking, canyoning, paddle boarding and horseback riding. There are mountain biking trails and ziplining tours; sportfishing expeditions and multi-day camping trips. The chances for unforgettable fun are out of this world!

Learn more about the Osa Peninsula and ask us about options for visiting on your next trip abroad.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had devastating effects on the tourism industry in Costa Rica, as has been the case all over the world. Yet as we move forward and upwards, preparing for what we will hope will be a bumper tourist season starting at the end of the year, Costa Rica is absolutely roaring to go.

We hope our bespoke tour suggestions will help jump-start your trip planning. If you’d love to know more about these and other safe destinations in Costa Rica, simply drop us a line or call us.

COVID Update – Costa Rica to Welcome Back US Tourists!

The Costa Rican government has just released details on its latest wave of border openings and the news is looking GOOD for US tourists! The country’s Tourism Minister announced that US tourists will be welcomed back to Costa Rica as of 1st September – however, restrictions do apply.

Read on to find out more!

costa rica
The world’s most beloved eco-tourism and adventure hub, Costa Rica is internationally praised for its handling of the coronavirus pandemic

PHOTO TAGLINE: The world’s most beloved eco-tourism and adventure hub, Costa Rica is internationally praised for its handling of the coronavirus pandemic

Adding to the ever-growing list of allowed tourists (namely citizens and residents of the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Uruguay, and several Asian countries) Costa Rica is preparing to welcome back US tourists in September, as long as they are from 6 select States.

They are:

  • Connecticut
  • Maine
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Vermont

Tourists will be required to show their valid driver’s license to prove residency (or government-issued ID equivalent) and authorities will also need license-plate verification. According to the government, these measures are needed to ensure only genuine residents of States with (currently) the lowest COVID infection rate are allowed entry into the country.

*We’re currently waiting on a go-ahead to also be given to residents of Colorado, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania – we hope this will be announced shortly

All US tourists wishing to travel to Costa Rica will have to:

  • Fill in an online health form – you can select to view it in English from the drop-down menu on the top, RHS. The form is to be filled out no sooner than 48hr before traveling. You’ll get a QR code upon completion, which you are to show at the airport on arrival. You can also print out the confirmation

  • Present a negative COVID-19 test – the only accepted test is the RT-PCR test, taken no sooner than 48hr prior to traveling

  • Present COVID-specific travel health insurance – which covers all medical assistance should test positive for the virus whilst in the country. If you prefer to play it safe, you can purchase insurance directly from Costa Rica. The government has nominated a few agencies and pre-approved their policies, so you know you’ll be getting the right one)

Costa Rica, right now, is not placing any quarantine restrictions of tourists who satisfy the above-mentioned requirements and enter from approved countries/States.

Needless to say, we would love to announce a full reopening of Costa Rica to every resident of every country, as that would mean this COBID-19 nightmare would be well and truly behind us. But alas, we’ll take the small wins when we can get them and, right now, this is already amazing news.

Plan Your Trip

Flights to Costa Rica are expected to increase, both in frequency and points of departure. New York is tipped to be the main springboard for Costa Rica flights and, on our end, we expect both the San Jose and Liberia International Airports to be fully operational. See the official San Jose Airport Website for details on expected incoming flights.

Costa Rica’s Tourism Minister said the 6 States in question have shown a “positive evolution of the pandemic” meaning they are making great strides forward and handling the current level of infection, keeping it at a manageable level. Given that US-based tourism is such a critical component of Costa Rica’s economy, it’s wonderful to see the authorities taking a logical approach: reopening the country but doing so slowly and safely.

According to the Health Ministry, the country has recorded just over 33,820 COVID-19 cases as of August 23.

It is also important that you know what restrictions your place of residence has introduced for tourist returning from Costa Rica.

We expect more concrete details about these latest developments to be announced shortly. Usually, the government makes a general announcement and then follows with greater details after a few days.

We’ll endeavor to keep you informed as news comes in.

What’s life like in Costa Rica, right now?

This month, we’ve seen a reopening of outdoor restaurants and cafés, as well as beaches, in so-called yellow zones. Of course, we’re all required to wear masks in indoor public places, except eating establishments where social distancing restrictions are in place (but staff still must wear them.

By and large, everyone seems to be getting used to the new normal: whipping on the mask, dabbing hand disinfectant when going out and keeping distance. The latter is arguably the hardest part: Costa Ricans are warm and huggy people. Like all Latinos, not being able to hug and give a peck on the cheek when meeting is the most painful part of this whole messy ordeal for Ticos.

During the month of August, more and more businesses opened although we had a short hiatus of shut-downs in the middle of the month. This gave businesses a chance to reboot the country’s economy whilst taking a short pause, half-way through the month, in case health services needed to catch up. Daily infections did increase, as expected, but this latest easing of border restrictions means the increase is still under control.

Costa Rica adventures await!

The best news of all, however, is that outdoor tourist activities have also recommenced and here at Costa Rica Rios, we’ve been busy planning and booking our most popular Week of Adventure Package starting from September. We’re meticulously planning for our tours to comply with all the directives, ensuring our valued guests have the time of their life and still keep safe.

All the country’s most beloved areas are open for tourists and given the cap on daily visitors (down 50% from the usual) it means you can come and explore world-famous sites like Arenal, Manuel Antonio and Turrialba and experience an uncrowded, unblemished paradise.

costa rica

At the moment, we are only running private & bespoke adventure tours for couples and families travelling within their own social bubble. We recently blogged about the benefits of bespoke tours, especially in COVID-times. Creating your own social bubble means you can double up on the fun and leave the stresses of 2020 behind you, as you kayak, raft, zipline and mountain bike in our pristine, unspoiled Costa Rican backyard.

Remote adventure vacations are what we’re all about here, at Costa Rica Rios, and we think our usual adventure style will fit post-COVID tours to perfection. The country is chock-full of exquisite remote lodges for that romantic getaway you’ve been waiting all year for, and insanely thrilling wild rivers and mountains for those high-adrenaline sports you can’t wait to get back into.

costa rica

Even though we don’t really expect everything to get back to normal until 2021, this further reopening step and the welcoming of US tourists is a heaven-send for everyone involved in tourism here. Traditionally, September and October are low-tourist months in the country so the opening is indeed very well-timed. Turning the country into a free-for-all, like we’ve seen happening in Europe, will likely just prolong the lockdown-agony and no-one wants to see that happening.

With this tentative, staggered opening, we’re hoping Costa Rica will be ready to welcome bigger numbers, and deliver bigger adventures, by the time high-season starts in December.

Ready to start planning your return to travel-freedom in the most exhilarating country on earth?

You know what to do! Call us or use our live chat and let us help you plan your own private and bespoke adventure tour to the incredible, nature-filled adventure playground that is Costa Rica. Because if there’s ever been a year when we need a once-in-a-lifetime, totally unforgettable adventure vacation in Costa Rica, this is surely the one!

Costa Rica Honeymoon Guide for 2020/21

Exclusivity, privacy and remoteness are what most honeymooners seek when they visit Costa Rica at any time and we’re certainly expecting more of the same during the 2020-21 wedding season. As Costa Rica gears up to open its borders to the rest of the world, the country’s tourism industry is tipped to bounce back swiftly, with even more emphasis placed on bespoke adventures – most especially for honeymooning, adventure-seeking couples.

Whilst we can all expect some safety measures to be in place for months to come in Costa Rica (it reasons that social distancing will be de rigueur for a while yet) we also expect plenty of areas to be open, safe and wonderful to explore. The country’s most glorious areas and national parks have had a break from visitors during what would have been a high tourist season this year so expect wilderness and wildlife to be at its most resplendent.

Wondering where to go, what to do and what glorious experiences you can you forward to in the 2020/21 honeymoon season in Costa Rica?

This Costa Rica honeymoon guide is for you!

What COVID-related restrictions can you expect on your honeymoon in Costa Rica In 2020/21?

As of July 23rd 2020, only the international airport in San Jose is receiving international flights although we expect the northern Liberia International Airport to also open for the 2020/21 honeymoon and vacation season. The latest phase of restriction easing is expected to be announced on 2nd of August.

We do expect social distancing regulations to remain in place for a while yet although the compulsory wearing of masks in public places will likely differ by region, depending on infection numbers.

The best thing you can do when planning your honeymoon in Costa Rica is to contact us before setting any plans in stone – let us know what you’re after and we can best advice you on where to go. We are keeping constantly updated on regional news and are in the best position to advice you, on a case by case basis.

Honeymoons in Costa Rica – the why, when, where & how

Why should you honeymoon in Costa Rica in 2020/21?

As the world slowly reopens post-COVID-19, Costa Rica is expected to be among the most popular honeymoon destination choices for North Americans. Short, direct and non-stop flights from several destinations in the US means risks of COVID infections are dramatically reduced – during the recovery phase of a pandemic, travelers are expected to honeymoon and vacation closer to home and priority is given to destinations requiring just a few hours’ flights, at most.

Costa Rica also boasts an idyllic climate year-round, with a stunning spine of central mountains creating distinct regional climates. No matter when you choose to visit Costa Rica, there will always be several regions at their very best. The country’s tourism infrastructure is also geared towards nature-filled adventures which perfectly suits the social distancing mantra. When you honeymoon in a splendid eco-lodge set in pristine wilderness, the only daily worries you’ll ever have is to how to fit in all the amazing experiences on offer.

Plan Your Trip

When should you honeymoon in Costa Rica in 2020/21?

As of December, most of Costa Rica will enter dry season, a period of about 5 months when rains are drastically reduced, leading to long sunny days that are prime for adrenal-filled sports like kayaking, whitewater rafting, zip-lining, surfing, snorkeling, mountain biking and plenty more.

Traditionally, January -April is the busiest travel period in Costa Rica so we usually advice our honeymoon adventure-seekers to plan their trip from about the end of April to the end of May. In 2021, however, you can count on crowds being greatly diminished – the silver lining of this coronavirus crisis is that, on recovery, you have the chance to really enjoy usually overcrowded highlights. Have you always wanted to visit Arenal, for example, but thought you’d find too many visitors in high season? Then visiting in 2021 is the best chance you’ll have of feeling like you have the place to yourself.

It’s important to know that just because January-April is considered ‘peak’ travel season in Costa Rica, that doesn’t mean honeymooning outside of this period is any less rewarding. On the contrary! The months of July and August typically receive very little rain too, hence locals calling this the ‘little summer season’ – this is the dry spell before the big rains arrive. The most astute and experienced Costa Rica return travelers know that these can potentially be the very best months of all: smaller tourist crowds, lower prices and still very idyllic conditions.

Moreover, if you’re keen on honeymooning on the Caribbean Coast of the country, then you’ll find that September and October are actually this area’s driest months of the year.

Where should you honeymoon in Costa Rica in 2020/21?

The usual suspects: The best and most popular honeymoon destinations in Costa Rica have traditionally been on the western side of the country: namely around Arenal Volcano, the Manuel Antonio National Park, the Gulf of Papagayo (particularly for luxury 5* resort stays) and the coastal area near Tamarindo.

The predicted best spots, post-COVID: In 2021, however, we do expect there to be a shift in destination requests – not because those areas will be unsafe to visit but, primarily, because more honeymooning adventure-seekers will want to stay off the usually-trodden path. Given Costa Rica is chock-full of hidden gems and sensational regions that are lesser-visited (but no less breath-taking) planning a sensational honeymoon adventure vacation off the beaten trail is super easy.

The Nicoya Peninsula and Osa Peninsula are set to be among the most highly-coveted destinations next year, both offering luxury and barefoot romance adventures in outstanding, unspoiled wilderness.

The Limon Province, over on the eastern side of the country, is the best base for multi-sport adventure vacations. Here is where you’ll find Costa Rica’s best whitewater river the Pacuare, revered the world over for offering sensational, white-knuckle adventures. Limon is home to the world-famous Tortuguero National Park (a remote wilderness haven renowned for its nesting sea turtles and idyllic isolation) and the Cahuita National Park, which offers amazing snorkeling options.

Plan Your Trip

Keep abreast of the latest updates: The Costa Rican government has introduced a system of color-coded alerts for all regions, in regards to COVID infections: red areas are closed to outsiders whilst caution should be adopted in orange zones and travel, with various degrees of restrictions, is allowed in yellow and green zones.

Alerts have been changing quite frequently these last few months (as can be expected) although the central region, and San Jose in particular, has been featuring in the news quite a bit these last few weeks. As of right now, there are several cantons on orange alert, which means transit is still possible although people are required to wear a mask in all public places.

Luckily, the Costa Rican government is singling out specific districts which have been declared hot-spots, leaving others within the same province unaffected by restrictions.

From June 2020, all of the country’s national parks reopened to the public, although visitors are required to pre-purchase entry tickets and daily capacity has been set at 50%.

The gist: With some cunning pre-planning and purchasing of entry tickets to national parks, this means you can visit your most desired honeymooning destinations and will get to soak up the splendorous with a tourist crowd that’s been cut in half.

That’s a pretty sweet bonus!

How should you honeymoon in Costa Rica in 2020/21?

Costa Rica’s all-inclusive resorts have always been quite popular with many honeymooners although we suspect that demand for these will not be as great in the coming travel season. Instead, couples will undoubtedly be looking for boutique eco-lodges that are slightly removed from the most populated and visited areas.

Rather than heading to the Gulf of Papagayo and staying in a crowded 5* resort, for example, couples may wish to explore more remote destinations, staying in one of the country’s most exclusive and unique lodges. They may wish to stay somewhere that’s more private, isolated and boasts fewer guests whilst still offering a wealth of exciting excursions and adventure activities.

Package honeymoons you might enjoy:

Our Off the Beaten Path Adventure Honeymoon package is a week-long fest of adventure, romance and exotic wilderness. It includes private transfers for easier and safer travel through the country and overnight stays in exclusive lodges along the Savegre River (for world-class whitewater rafting) and in the magnificent Osa Peninsula. This honeymoon adventure includes aqua-hiking, rappelling, canyoning and snorkeling, as well as plenty of time for outstanding wildlife spotting and R&R.

For the ultimate thrill, we’ve devised out popular Total Adventure Honeymoon – perfectly suited to couples who get a kick out of sharing extreme outdoor adventures together. If your dream once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon memories involve adrenaline-packed excursions in some of the world’s most glorious wilderness, this one’s bound to hit the spot.

All our Costa Rica Honeymoon Adventure Vacations highlight the lesser-known highlights of the country but the above-mentioned to are specifically tailored to post-COVID honeymoons and set in remote areas that are far less visited. What’s more, you can Build Your Own Honeymoon with us here, at Costa Rica Rios, and this is perhaps the best way to go about planning your visit in 2020/21: simply tell us what you’d like to do in our marvellous land of sun, sea and sensational fun and we can tailor an itinerary that incorporates your desires and budget with the latest safety regulations.

COSTA RICA CALLING – Reopening Details for Summer Adventure Vacations

July 24, 2020 – Check below for recent updates

Costa Rica has announced it will reopen its borders on August 2nd and as adventure seekers from all over the world anticipate details, we thought we’d update you on what’s been happening in our neck of the rainforests.

The COVID-19 crisis has had devastating effects the world over but we’re grateful that Costa Rica has fared remarkably well. The government’s swift response has been obvious, given the modest number of infections and casualties. The reopening of businesses and a return to (a new) normal has been happening for over two months now. As is the case with just about every country, regional differences have meant that whilst some have been able to visit their nearest national parks and enjoy some (socially distanced) adventures, others have had to wait a little longer.

Like everyone involved in the travel industry in Costa Rica, we have also been eagerly awaiting the latest phase of reopening, hoping to soon bring bucketloads of adventure-filled fun to intrepid explorers.

Here’s all you need to know about Costa Rica’s coronavirus battle and the latest updates on reopening dates and details.

How has Costa Rica fared during the COVID-19 crisis?

Costa Rica was one of the first countries to apply a complete lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic, effectively shutting its doors merely 12 days after its first infection case was detected and on the day it recorded its first COVID-19 death. Ironically enough, Costa Rica’s first infection was also the first in the Central American region and although other countries have now suffered tremendous losses due to inaction, Costa Rica has managed to keep the spread at bay.

At time of writing, Costa Rica has recorded 24000 cases, over 7800 recoveries with 244 locals passing away.

The country had been planning for the arrival of the virus since January, said President Alvarado, which means Costa Rica, unlike other nations in the region, was not caught unawares.

Plan Your Trip

What kind of easing of restrictions has Costa Rica implemented recently?

Costa Rica’s reluctance to reopen fully has certainly been understandable and the government’s staggered phased plan to reopen businesses and tourist attractions seems to be working well.

By mid-May, the government released re-opening plans which included:

May 31st

  • Vehicle restrictions based on number plates (this is something many Latin American countries ordinarily do to limit emissions in large cities) which involved omitting two numbers between Monday and Friday and up to five numbers on weekend (ie. taken as the last digit on the number plate)
  • 50% reduction in visitor number to national parks (with previously purchased entry tickets) – the only parks which reopened on 31st May were Corcovado, Manuel Antonio, Cahuita, Arenal, Rincon de la Vieja, Irazu, Poas, Guayabo, Braulio Carrillo, Los Quetzales and Monteverde
  • Only non-contact sporting activities allowed
  • Restaurants could operate on weekends – take-away food only
  • Small hotels (< 20 rooms) could operate but only at 50% capacity
  • Opening of beaches, with social distancing rules in place, between 5 and 8am during the week

June 1st

  • By June, all national parks in the country were allowed to open, albeit at 50% capacity – as were all public parks
  • Restaurants were also allowed to open, at 50% capacity
  • Museums also reopened, at 50% capacity
  • All other hotels were allowed to reopen, also at 50% capacity
  • Vehicular restrictions remain in place

June 21st

Towards the end of June, it was time to reopen cinemas and shops (all at 50% capacity) and bars (at 25% capacity)

July 13th

  • All beaches reopened with social distancing rules in place
  • Contact sports can go ahead but spectator crowds are reduced to 20% of venue’s capacity
  • Vehicular restrictions remain in place

August 2nd

The new phase of reopening and accompanying restrictions is yet to be fully announced. However, we do know that Costa Rica will reopen to visitors from what it considers low-risk countries.

UPDATES AS THEY HAPPEN:

As of 11.59pm on August 1st, citizens of the following will be welcomed:

  • European Union
  • UK
  • Canada

Travelers will need to hold travel insurance, have completed a medical form online before travelling and present a recent COVID-test result (negative, naturally) upon entry. Your travel agent / airline representative will fill you in on all details.

Only a handful of flights will be allowed in every week so it’s recommended you book your flight to Costa Rica as soon as possible. This staggered and opening of borders will allow Costa Rica to finally welcome tourists once more, whilst gauging the feasibility of further easing of restrictions.

We expect more countries to be included in the list and we shall update this section as announcements are made.

What do we know, for certain?

Although details of the next phase of reopening have not yet been confirmed, the Health Ministry has made it clear that some rules will remain in place, for residents and visitors alike. The government calls these the ‘golden rules’ and they are to be respected by everyone living or visiting Costa Rica for the summer:

  • Masks should be worn in all public places, especially on public transport
  • Everyone should maintain a social distance of at least 6 feet (1.8m) when out and about
  • Kindly abide by any request to have your temperature taken prior to entering an establishment (hotel, restaurant, café, bar etc)

Costa Rica also uses colored emergency alerts, divided up into green, yellow, orange and red. These are mostly used in times of crisis (like expected torrential rains or volcanic eruptions) and they have also been adopted to command the response of COVID-19 measures in differing regions.

The color-coded alerts are perhaps the most important things all visitors to Costa Rica should know – a quick glance at an updated map will tell you which areas of the country are open for tourism at the time you visit and which are not.

Green – The lowest level of emergency alert is meant to be primarily informative. This tells you that a region is open and operational although you should pay close attention to sudden changes

Yellow – In COVID-terms, a yellow code means infections are on the rise and authorities are preparing to take restrictive measures if the situation does not stabilize and/or improve

Orange – The first proactive response begins at regional levels and here you’ll see the first restrictions of crowd numbers, opening times for establishments and the isolation of suspected cases. In many countries, this would be considered a lockdown, with residents only allowed to go out for essential services, like food shopping, doctor visits and whatnot. Masks will now be mandatory in all public places

Red – By the time a red alert has been declared, you can expect the region in question to be in complete lockdown

During this last week of July, several regions are under red alert (San Jose, Alajuela, Puntarenas, Guanacaste, Heredia, Limon and Cartago) whilst the rest of the country is on orange alert.

Plan Your Trip

What to do if you plan to visit Costa Rica as soon as borders open

Once Costa Rica opens its borders to foreign visitors, we will update this post with the latest news. It’s important you are aware of travel restrictions in your home country, first and foremost, before understanding how the new rules in Costa Rica will affect your travel plans.

As of right now, we are unsure if the government will demand a 14-day quarantine for certain nationalities but we’ll be sure to list all restrictions and/or conditions as they’re published by the Ministry of Health and Costa Rican government.

It’s also worth noting that there has never been a complete, countrywide lockdown in place in the country during this entire time. Planning your adventure vacation in Costa Rica, therefore, will be mostly about avoiding certain areas and, instead, exploring and enjoying the lowest-risk areas.

Please feel free to contact us at any time to inquire about the current situation, on the ground. In the meantime, take a look at our adventure vacation tour packages starting in September. We look forward to welcoming you…and so is fabulous Costa Rica!

Costa Rica Honeymoons 2020/21– The Most Exquisite Remote Lodges You Need To Know About

Given the sheer concentration of stunning lodges sprawled across Costa Rica’s luscious wilderness, socially-distanced honeymooning options abound. Want to enjoy a magnificent honeymoon in the land of startling beaches, dramatic volcanoes and unbelievable natural beauty whilst still keeping COVID-safe?

These are the most exquisite (and exquisitely remote) honeymoon lodges in Costa Rica you need to know about!

Costa Rica Honeymoons in Coronavirus Times

During and post COVID-19, Costa Rica is set to be among the most hotly-contested honeymoon destinations in the world. The Latin American country that’s showcased one of the best COVID-19 responses is also the one with the lowest numbers of infections and casualties. Travelers who feel confident to travel and are searching for a safe adventure vacation destination couldn’t choose a better spot to take their much-awaited holiday abroad.

Since opening up to the rest of the world once more on August 2nd, tourist crowds are kept at bay thanks to restricted entry numbers. Only a handful of international flights are allowed to enter Costa Rica every week so, once here, you can also expect the country to be blissfully uncrowded, even during the (usual) peak-tourism period between January and April, 2021.

Remoteness and social distance are part and parcel of adventure honeymoons in our shores at the best of times and we expect more couples will be looking for exclusivity and isolation. Luckily, romance, privacy and uncrowded havens are what Costa Rica does best!

Here are the spots we think you’ll enjoy most:

Lapas Rio Lodge, Osa Peninsula

Right at the convergence between the Golfo Dulce and the Pacific Ocean, in Cabo Matapalo, there hides a breath-taking lodge set amidst 1,000 acres of amazing tropical wilderness. Ideal for the consummate wilderness and adventure-loving couple, Lapas Rio is one of Costa Rica’s most astonishing gems, set in one of its most magnificent pockets of nature. Unspoiled and wild, inhabited by a flurry of unique wildlife and feeling about as far away from everywhere as can be, this 5* treasure offers plenty of active pursuits (kayaking, jungle hiking, waterfall chasing, bird spotting, surfing, horseback rides and more), just a handful of drop-dead-gorgeous private lodges, an in-house restaurant, pool and seriously divine services. If you’re looking for that all-inclusive indulgence and an unforgettable adventure all in one, Lapas Rio is for you.

Plan Your Trip

The Peace Lodge @ La Paz Waterfall, Volcano Poas National Park

The name really says it all: The Peace Lodge is all about privacy and tranquility and, while we’re at it, eye-popping jungle views to match. Conveniently located in Heredia, this 3* lodge is much more impressive than its rating may convey and much of it has to do with its setting. Nestled within the magical gardens of the La Paz Waterfall reserve, the lodge is literally enveloped by luscious jungles and dramatic waterfalls. Intricately carved into shape by the hands of Costa Rica’s master builders, The Peace is often referred to as a living work of art. The exposed beams are polished to perfection and the décor perfectly suits the jungle surroundings. The highlight here, which is the nature that frames the lodge, is given ample space to shine thanks to the oversized windows and sensational open-air terraces. The food, service and amenities are outstanding and, of course, you’ll have free run of the reserve so you can visit the many attractions during your stay, at no extra charge.

costa rica

Hacienda Barrigona, Nicoya Peninsula

Just north of beautiful Playa Samara on the south-western coast of the uncrowded Nicoya Peninsula, Barrigona is one of Costa Rica’s most hidden of gems. This gorgeous place boasts only 10 guest rooms and is a haven of tranquility in a stunning corner of Nicoya. A leisurely 15-minute walk will see you reach the unspoiled swimming beaches, and you’ll also find plenty of nature hiking trails within the 500-acre property, where colorful birds and monkeys abound. More of a private luxury villa than your standard honeymoon lodge, Barrigona is especially popular with those planning an all-in-one Costa Rica wedding and honeymoon vacation because it can be booked entirely for one party.

How’s that for a socially distanced paradise?

Plan Your Trip

Rio Celeste Hideaway, Tenorio Volcano National Park

Just a few feet away from the entrance to the Tenorio Volcano National Park, the Rio Celeste Hideaway is a 4* lodge that’s ideal for honeymooning couple who want to explore Costa Rica a little off the usual trail. Tenorio is revered for its incredible biodiversity and the surrounding area comprises dry forests and luscious jungles, volcanic peaks, waterfalls and the most incredible turquoise river you’ll ever see. A hiker’s dream base, this lodge is all about enjoying the wilderness whilst having plenty of indulgences to boot: wonderful cuisine, a fabulous swim-up bar incorporated in the sapphire-hued pool and gorgeous cabins boasting indoor jacuzzies and outdoor showers. This place is wonderfully atmospheric and the direct access to the world-famous Rio Celeste just one reason to stay.

Nature Lodge Finca Los Caballos, Nicoya Peninsula

Another Nicoya treasure to be discovered – this time on the eastern coast – Los Caballos is a wonderful option if you’re looking for a more affordable honeymoon lodge in Costa Rica yet one which offers just as many delights as its 5-starred counterparts. Set high on verdant hills above the charming and still traditional town of Montezuma and offering splendid ocean views, this enchanting finca is super comfortable and immensely cozy. Quiet and contemplative, the lodge is all about soaking up the sounds and feel of the jungle – waking up to howler monkeys and chirping toucans suits the nature lover to a T. Whilst there’s plenty to see, do and devour in Montezuma town, the lodge itself is about relaxation and serenity: a honeymooning couple’s ideal mix.

costa rica

Costa Rica’s best and remotest honeymoon lodges may differ in terms of setting, atmosphere and offerings, yet they all have one main commonality: these are the best options if you’re seeking exceptional adventures, plenty of romance and privacy with the added bonus of sublime social isolation away from big tourist crowds.

The Safest Adventure Vacations in Costa Rica – Your Guide to Private & Bespoke Tours

Private and bespoke Costa Rica adventure tours have always been hugely popular here, at Costa Rica Rios, yet if there’s a time when we’re expecting them to truly boom it will be during the 2020/21 holiday season.

The safest and most rewarding way to enjoy a thrill-filled adventure is on a private tour, where your vacationing party – be it your closest friends or family members – are the only company you’ll have.

adventure

The addition of private transfers and the freedom to choose the right accommodation also play a huge role in making bespoke adventure tours so very popular at any time, let alone during a global pandemic. Combined with a bevy of safety precautions that are easy to follow and cause minimal disruptions to travel, private tours are the ideal solution to our current conundrum: enjoying a stint of adventure travel in one of the most rewarding countries on earth whilst keeping safe and healthy.

The most oft-asked questions about private and bespoke tours to Costa Rica answered…right here!

Plan Your Trip

Why should I travel to Costa Rica in 2020/21?

Costa Rica has reported about the best outcome in the entire Latin American region – a swift response meant that the country’s borders were closed to the outside world merely days after the first COVID-19 infection was even reported. Moreover, the good results were not just a matter of isolation: Costa Rica has staggered an easing of restrictions since mid-May, slowly getting the country back to normal (travelling included) whilst keeping infection numbers at bay.

Whilst the return of tourism is obviously much-needed here, the government doesn’t want tourist back ‘at any price’. The well-being of locals and foreigners alike is at the forefront of priorities and, when you travel to Costa Rica and follow safety protocols as laid out by regional governments, you can be assured your risk of COVID infection are kept at an absolute minimum.

Reached easily and swiftly via direct and non-stop flights from several locations, Costa Rica is one of the best vacation destination choices post-COVID, no matter where you’re from. European travel agents are promoting Costa Rica alongside all known countries that have fared well during the pandemic.

More importantly, however, Costa Rica makes social distancing easy – adventure vacations here are very much focused on getting you into nature and keeping you there for the duration of your trip.

adventure

What’s the safest way to enjoy an adventure vacation in Costa Rica right now?

The fewer people you have contact with, the lesser the risk of contracting any kind of infectious disease – this is as true at home as it is when you travel to Costa Rica.

Bespoke tours are packaged and organised tours that are tailored to you and your private travel party alone. You’ll get a driver and guide that’ll stay with you the entire time and will not have to share your private space with anyone else. Choose to travel with immediate family members only and your contact with outsiders will arguably be less here in Costa Rica, on vacation, than you’d ordinarily have back home.

Family and small group adventure vacations will undoubtedly be the best choices for travel this year and next.

adventure

Bespoke private tours deliver that ultimate balance between safety and travel freedom

Plan Your Trip

Does it matter where you stay once you arrive?

Yes, it does. The country’s many mega-resorts may have been popular in recent years yet the demand for smaller and more isolated eco-lodges is bound to be at an all-time high this year. Skip the buffet meals and overcrowded dining rooms and, instead, look forward to wilderness-infused eco-lodges set in some of the most spellbinding nature in Costa Rica.

Choosing smaller and less-crowded accommodation options isn’t just safer: in a country like Costa Rica, whose forests are replete with incredible wilderness, choosing smaller, quieter and more remote lodges means your unique journey is made all the more special and rewarding. This is the reason our adventure tours typically include only stays in these kinds of lodges.

adventure

Do you have to steer clear of the most popular national parks?

Not necessarily. Ironically, travelling to normally-crowded hot-spots will be a lot more rewarding in 2020/21 because crowds will be drastically reduced. Costa Rica’s national parks have been reopened for 2 months, at 50% capacity, which means trails are uncrowded and, even in super famous places, you can feel like you have the whole place to yourself. You can still include popular highlights like Arenal, Manuel Antonio and Monteverde on your private bespoke tour – we’ll just plan your visit in a way and at a time when you’re likely to encounter far fewer fellow tourists.

A huge part of Costa Rica’s appeal is that keeping away from people is super easy at any given time, let alone during this current period when visitor numbers are restricted.

Which airlines fly to Costa Rica, right now?

Whilst many people are worried about their safety risks during the flight to Costa Rica, the risks are statistically very low. Nevertheless, you can trust airlines to take all necessary measures to keep passengers safe. Why? Because any potential outbreaks of COVID on a flight will ground the airline in question and, potentially, close airports and no-one wants to see that happen.

At time of writing, Costa Rica is planning to open its borders to residents of the European Union, the UK and Canada on August 2, with only half a dozen flights allowed to arrive every week.

We expect airline services to get back to a semi-normal routine by the end-of-year vacation time (December, 2020) and for more nationalities to be allowed entry although, as you can understand, this is a very fluid situation so it’s imperative you keep updated on the latest news.

When you’re ready to book your flight, simply ask your travel agent to confirm availability of flights (and choice of airlines) departing from your nearest international airport.

We urge all prospective visitors to Costa Rica to take out comprehensive travel insurance that includes COVID-related benefits, such as for flight delay and cancellation. Given that some entry restrictions are expected to stay in place for a few months, we do expect seats to book out fast – take advantage of current benefits offered by airlines and book your seat on a plane as soon as it becomes available. Many airlines are also not charging extra for changes to the departure date, on your side.

What else can I do to keep safe when traveling to Costa Rica?

There’s actually plenty you can do to keep safe and healthy, even before you hit our shores. Here are a few safety tips we’ve gathered from expert websites:

  1. Drive yourself to the airport or organize private transport – now is not the time for bus/train trips
  2. Make sure no-one comes to see you off – the fewer people at the airport, and the less time you spend there, the better. People are less likely to stop for a coffee or a bite to eat at the airport if there’s no-one there to see them off
  3. Research the latest changes to your airport’s check-in procedure – these are likely to have changed so give yourself plenty of time and know where to park/check in
  4. Pack your own mask and your personal hand sanitizer – use them!
  5. Check if airlines are restricting meal services – pack your own food
  6. Stay at least 6ft away – minimize your contact with others and move through enclosed areas as quickly as possible
  7. Relax – With a mask, good hand hygiene and social distancing, there’s absolutely no need to panic on your flight

Costa Rica Hiking Guide – Cerro Chirripó

Costa Rica’s highest peak is one of the most coveted hiking challenges in the country, one that rewards hard-core mountaineers with astonishing views and the priceless chance to explore, on foot, some of the most unique wilderness on earth. With our Costa Rica Hiking Guide to Chirripó, we’ll guide you virtually up to this incredible 12,536ft (3,821m) peak and through exceptional cloud forests that are only found in the Latin American tropics.

Given the options for multi-day hiking excursions, Cerro Chirripó is doable for just about anyone with a decent level of fitness. Yes, you can smash up this bad-boy in just a single day if you wanted to but you can also take it easy, enjoy the ascent, and spend a few days lost in its outstanding nature.

The choice, as always, is yours.

Plan Your Trip

Where is Cerro Chirripó?

Located in the San Jose Province, only a 3hr-drive east of the capital city, Cerro Chirripó is the crown jewel of the Talamanca Mountain range. Rising from the Caribbean coast in Costa Rica’s south-eastern region, the Talamancas reach their peak with Chirripó before descending, on the west, all the way to the Pacific. In its southern fringes, the range marks the border between Costa Rica and Panama

The base-town for Cerro Chirripó hikes is San Gerardo de Rivas, a small village that caters to hikers and sits about a third of the way up the mountain, at an altitude of 4,00ft (1, 220m).

What’s so special about this Costa Rica hike?

Considered the wildest range in Central America and the highest of non-volcanic origin, Talamanca doesn’t just impress with its stunning high peaks. The range boasts unique high-altitude tropical rainforests and is inhabited by a wide range of wildlife found both in South and North America. It is, for all intents, the wildlife land-bridge between the two continents.

Here, you’ll see lakes and valleys that were carved and shaped by glaciers over 20,000 years ago and will experience an array of microclimates that have enticed the growth of an eclectic variety of flora species. You’ll literally experience more variety of nature here than in several countries combined. On a crystal-clear day, you’ll soak up unbelievable views of both of Costa Rica’s coastlines from the very peak of Chirripó. What’s more, the mountains and their surrounding forests are also home to several indigenous tribes so this whole area holds as high a cultural value as much as it does a wilderness one.

For all these reasons, as well as for the fact that Chirripó, is also the highest in all of Central America, the range is now a UNESCO-listed national park.

Due to its remoteness and relative inaccessibility, the Talamancas have remained blissfully unspoilt. When you decide to hike Cerro Chirripó, therefore, you won’t just be taking on a challenging mountain ascent: you’ll be entering one of the most prized and biodiverse mountain reserves in the world.

How long does it take to ascend Chirripó?

The hiking trail to Cerro Chirripó starts just outside San Gerardo at the entrance of the national park, and stretches for 9mi (15km) on a relatively steep ascent. As mentioned earlier, hard-core and experienced hikers love to challenge themselves by completing a full ascent in just a single, brutal hiking day although, for sheer recreational purposes and to really enjoy the amazing experience, you’ll want to stretch this to a 2-3-day hike.

Refugios, or hiking huts, are scattered about the trail to cater to hikers, a convenient bonus given free-camping here is prohibited.

When is the best time to hike Cerro Chirripó?

The park sees a healthy amount of rain all year-long (Chirripó means Land of Eternal Waters) and this high-altitude terrain also enjoys unpredictable rain at any time of year. Best tackled during the dry season, from January to April, Chirripó will still require you to be fully-prepared for all climatic eventualities.

What to know before you go?

***Update April, 2020*** The park is having contractual issues with SINAC, the company that’s been in charge of permit issuing for a number of year. At time of writing, entry is ‘on hold’ but we expect the situation to be resolved shortly as the park, and its main hiking trail, bring in a much-needed economic boost to this agricultural region. Please let us know if you intend hiking Cerro Chirripó on your Costa Rica adventure tour in 2020 and we’ll keep you abreast of all the latest developments.

Here are some thing should know before planning your visit:

  • The busiest weekend of the year for Cerro Chirripó hikes is Easter long-weekend as it’s not only a national holiday (a time when Ticos travel) but also at the tail-end of the popular dry season. Permits for this and all other peak times should be made a few months in advance
  • Don’t be fooled by the latitude of Cerro Chirripó as temperatures and climbing conditions can be erratic. This may be a mountain in the tropics but the peak is by no means tropical – in fact, it can be downright freezing up here so pack accordingly (more on that, below)
  • Altitude sickness can be a real threat at this altitude so know what red flags you should be looking for. Chances you’ll feel the effects are higher if you choose to hike Chirripó in one day rather than take it easier and stretch your ascent over several days
  • A one-day hike usually takes 12 rather full-on hours. The trail isn’t all steep, in fact, the first two-thirds are quite gradual. However, the trail is long with the last section, the steepest, requiring some serious stamina
  • On a two-day hike, you can tackle one long hike to the base camp at km14.5 along the trail (9mi), Crestones. Start Day 1 at dawn and enjoy the usually crystal-clear morning and, Day 2, set off from Crestones at 3am, so you can reach the peak at dawn. It makes for a truly magical experience
  • Permits are NOT issued at the ranger station outside San Gerardo and have, so far, been only available online through SINAC. The booking system has been notoriously user-unfriendly which is the reason agencies, like us here at Costa Rica Rios, take on the logistical hassle of securing permits for our guests
  • Crestones Base Camp boasts a number of trails to other peaks and, if you have the time, you can easily spend a few days based here and take on alternative trails for a truly comprehensive hiking experience
  • Even though San Gerardo is just a cute little pueblito, you’ll find a surprising array of hiking food and snacks so no need to stock-up ahead of time
  • You’ll find a sweet rest stop, Llano Bonito, about half-way to Crestones, where you can buy some snacks and drinks
  • The area around Cerro Chirripó is home to plantations you can visit and a host of other phenomenal attractions and adventure activities – there’s a lot to see and do here aside from climbing the main peak and we can help you plan a multi-activity adventure tour in this area
  • No matter what time of year you choose to ascent Chirripó, expect below-freezing temperatures at the peak so make sure you pack thermals and warm hiking gear
  • Want to make the whole experience a little easier? We can organise a porter or pack-horse for your hike. This is an inexpensive but priceless help and your knees will be particularly thankful
  • Don’t forget to pack a head-lamp for the pitch-black ascent to the peak
