Mountain Biking Costa Rica

Mountain Biking in Costa Rica

With all the forest trails and over 60 volcanoes in Costa Rica, what a fabulous place this country has become for those of you who love mountain biking. Come to think of it, perhaps we can have our own Costa Rica version, which we could call volcano biking? While the utmost respect is being shown the natural environment in Costa Rica and the millions of acres of rainforest, cloud forest and jungle, all this is naturally interspersed with trails, many of which are crying out to be ridden on a mountain bike.

Mountain biking with Costa Rica Rios

Our 8-Day Adventure Tour Package ensures you will have a whole raft of challenges during your stay in Costa Rica, and one of those includes mountain biking down Irazu Volcano, the largest volcano in Costa Rica. Because of the popularity of mountain biking in Costa Rica we are also happy to include as many days mountain biking as you would like in any of our customized adventure holiday packages.

We also recognize, as with many adventure sports, that where canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking and surfing/paddleboarding are concerned, it isn’t always easy or practical to bring your own gear with you, but there’s nothing more disappointing than finding what’s available to hire is of a poor quality. Consequently, we have invested heavily in a fleet of mountain bikes, which are definitely ‘fit for purpose’ as they are equipped with disc brakes, front suspension and high-performance components.

Bike helmets, gloves, and water bottles are also provided for our Costa Rica mountain biking trips. To make your mountain biking as enjoyable as possible, if you prefer clipless pedals, by all means bring your own and we will adapt one of our own bikes for you.

Great mountain biking trails in Costa Rica

Our favorite mountain biking trail has to be the one we use for our main adventure tours – it is hard to beat the views and surrounding natural environment on Irazu Volcano. However, for those of you who want to experience more than one trail, we have compiled a list of other mountain bike trails that we know you will enjoy:

  • La Angelina Mountain Bike Park, Cartago – an intermediate skill rating and covering 11km. Great views, good uphill and switchbacks, with superb downhill elements. 600m elevation, 600m descent
  • Los Senderos de Colón, Colón – over 40 trails covering 35km and offering 2,455m of descent. A great combination of all-mountain, enduro and downhill racing
  • Vuelta Completa, Cartago – 24km of medium-difficulty single track trail with 800m of ascent and 700m of descent. Night riding also available
  • VIP, Cuidad Colón – 1500m track with 220m of climb and 25m of descent, taking an average time of 21.21 to complete

There are mountain bike trails all over Costa Rica, with particular note being made for the facilities you will find in Las Catalinas and La Fortuna.

Specializing in adventure vacations in Costa Rica, here at Costa Rica Rios, aside from our 8-day Adventure Tour, we can create individual, bespoke adventure packages, including a Honeymoon Adventure Vacation, to concentrate on your favored activities, including mountain biking.

It is hard to resist the allure of Costa Rica if you like exploring and are looking for the adventure of a lifetime, so take advantage of our local knowledge and give us a call. We’ll be glad to talk you through all you can expect from an adventure vacation in Costa Rica, and happily answer any questions you may have.
