Discover the Surreal Gardens of Zarcero

Rated among the world’s most beautiful botanical gardens, Parque Francisco Alvarado is an ornamental treasury of fantastical shapes. Designed in the 1960s, the park makes use of its stunning conifer cypresses which are trimmed and shaped into an array of super fun shapes.

Located in the charming town of Zarcero, the surreal gardens of Alvarado are a must-see for anyone visiting Costa Rica and looking for an off-beat attraction.

Where is Zarcero?

Zarcero is only an hour’s drive north-west from the capital, San Jose, and can easily be visited on a day-trip or on a stopover if you’re driving to popular hubs like Arenal, Monteverde and Manuel Antonio. Unless you have private transport – which we can include on all our Costa Rica adventure vacation packages – you’ll need to take a bus, which leaves from the bus terminal of Alajuela, known locally as the Coca Cola Terminus.

What are the Zarcero gardens all about?

The botanical Alvarado gardens of Zarcero sit at the heart of the town, right by its stunning San Rafael Church on the main square. The park’s entrance is a row of more than a dozen archways, carved from cypress, which lead the way into a manicured garden filled with cypress-carved animals and abstract shapes of all sizes.

The surreal Zarcero gardens were designed and sculpted by the park’s curator, Don Evangelista Blanco, in 1964. Over the years, Blanco has carved everything from helicopters to dinosaurs, monkey-ridden motorbikes, traditional Tico oxcarts, animals and people of all shapes and sizes. Up until his dismissal in 2016, Blanco could still be seen tending to his prized garden creation, donning his signature fedora hat and holding a pair of garden shears. Don Blanco’s dismissal caused quite a stir in the tight-knit community and even though the local authorities found the reasoning to be somewhat adequate – after all, Don Blanco’s health was failing and the church was fearful of a workplace accident– they were still critical of his unceremonious dismissal. The fact that the matter was even investigated, and that a petition was drawn up to declare the park a national treasure, speaks volumes as to its standing in the community.

Zarcero Park is a popular local hang-out spot and acts as the true epicentre of town. There’s street-art on the outer walls and, in summer, the gardens are blanketed by a myriad of colourful flower beds. This is one of the most delightful urban parks to explore in all of Costa Rica.

What’s there to see and do in Zarcero, aside from the gardens?

The town Itself may not seem like it holds too much interest for tourists yet, if you were to stay for a night, you’ll find its authenticity utterly charming. This is a great place to visit if you’d love a look-see into a more traditional Costa Rica way of life.

Zarcero, a small town of only about 4,200 inhabitants, sits at an altitude of 1,700m (5,500ft), flanking the Cordillera Central range. Given its temperate-to-cool climate and mountainous surroundings, it is a popular weekend-getaway destination for city folks from San Jose, especially during the hottest and stickiest months of the year. Although not exactly crazy-popular with foreign tourists, the town still gets quite busy on weekends so if you’d like to visit at a quieter time, try to get here on a weekday.

Revered for its organic, locally-grown produce, Zarcero is, at the very least, a very delicious place to stop for a lazy lunch with a host of cafés and restaurant serving up amazing and authentic dishes. The local fresh cheese, a tastier and slightly drier version of mozzarella, is one of the best produce specialties of the town and an absolute highlight in the region. Nearby, you’ll find several dairy farms, some of which you can visit. When driving from San Jose, keep a lookout for street stands selling queso palmito and buy some for your road trip north.

Whilst visiting, also look out for delicious crystallised grapefruit snacks filled with sweetened milk, vine-ripened tomatoes and a host of organic tropical fruits.

Nearby, you can pay a visit to Finca Organica Tierra de Suenos, one of Zarcero’s most prized organic farms. Take a tour or simply let them know you’ll be coming through to stock up on some delicious produce.

The main draw in town, aside from the surreal gardens, is the San Rafael Church, a beautifully-designed 19^th-century church showcasing an ornate and outstanding interior with paintings depicting the stations of the cross.

What to see and do on a daytrip to Zarcero?

Here are some ideas of nearby activities and attractions that you could combine on a north-bound trip to Zarcero:

Juan Castro Blanco National Park – Just east of town is where you’ll find one of the most enchanting yet lesser-known of Costa Rica’s national parks. Known as ‘the park of the waters’, Castro Blanco covers a stunning area of mid-level cloud forests framed by three long-extinct volcanic peaks, all over 2,000m (6560ft) in altitude. Many prime rivers have their source right here, and the park encompasses three unique rainforest ecosystems at differing altitudes. This area is renowned for its extensive flower farms, many of which export their magnificent flowers all over North America. The park isn’t yet built for tourism, except for a super-luxe resort that attracts VIPs from all over the world. Trails are few and far between and camping is about the only way to experience this incredible and unspoiled wilderness. A particularly ideal destination for bird-lovers, Blanco is a great place if you’re in search of the ethereal Quetzal.

Bajos del Toro Reserve – One of the most spectacular hidden treasures of the Costa Rican central wilderness, the privately-owned Bajos del Toro Reserve borders Juan Castro Blanco and offers sensational wilderness experiences way off the beaten path. With its crystalline waterfalls and verdant forests, Toro is a sublime wildlife and wilderness destination for hikers, home to two of Costa Rica’s most splendid waterfalls: the aptly-named Tesoro Escondido (hidden treasure) and Toro Amarillo. What Is Whitewater Rafting and Kayaking?

Fast-moving river water – which literally creates ‘whitewater’ – is the main propelling force for both rafting (multi-person inflatable raft helmed by a professional guide) and kayaking (single person canoe). Both are exceptionally fun water sports with the main difference being rafting is a group activity whilst kayaking is a solo activity, although one is usually in the company of other kayakers – and even rafters, when out on the river. Many whitewater excursions in Costa Rica head downriver in a group, with rafters and kayakers along for the ride.

Which One Is More Exhilarating: Rafting or Kayaking?

Being on the whitewater for the very first time is a thrilling experience no matter which activity you choose. Having said that, kayaking is a tad more challenging and that makes it more thrilling. This means that kayaking gives you the option to up the ante on gentler river runs. If you have experience on whitewater but are travelling with friends or family members who don’t, you can still all enjoy a day out together on the same river. They’ll have a lovely ride on the raft, with a guide, and you can go all adrenaline-junkie-nuts on a kayak.

Whitewater rivers are graded by level of difficulty and, in Costa Rica, you’ll see rapids classified from I to V, with I being the easiest and best for beginners and V reserved for experienced rafters and kayakers. Water flow is the determining class factor, obviously, so the same stretch of river can be classified differently depending on the time of year you visit.

Is There an Ideal Time to Go Whitewater Rafting and Kayaking in Costa Rica?

Yes and no: the ideal time for extensive whitewater adventures for experienced rafters and kayakers, is just after the rains, when rivers are at their fullest. In this case, the period between September and February is quite ideal. Having said that, many of Costa Rica’s rivers are regulated by dams and even more offer beginner and intermediate trips can be enjoyed all year long. Considering that different areas of Costa Rica receive varying degrees of rainfall during the Green Season, moreover, it also reasons that whitewater suitability will highly depend on which region you wish to explore.

The Best Rivers for Whitewater Rafting & Kayaking in Costa Rica

Not only is Costa Rica one of the world’s best whitewater rafting and kayaking destination but it is also one of the safest. Part of this is due to river classifications dictating age requirements, so although there are plenty of stretches that are ideal for families with children, they will usually be age-restricted (to 8 or 12 years old as a minimum, for example) and plenty more advanced stretches where children will not be allowed to raft or kayak.

Luckily, the options are truly impressive. There are more than a dozen established kayaking and rafting runs in Costa Rica and new stretches are added to the maze, almost every year. We’ll detail the top 5 options, starting with the best of the lot.

Rio Pacuare – Class II, III and IV– Year-round

The #1 choice in the country and reputed second-best rafting and kayaking river on earth (after the Colorado River), the Rio Pacuare manages to tick all the boxes. First of all, it boasts a mindboggling 52 rapids, which range from beginner Class II to experienced Class IV (so it is, quite literally, suitable for everyone) and runs through an astonishing section of remote Turrialba wilderness, affording great chances for wildlife spotting. Rafters and kayakers will likely see monkeys, toucans, sloths and so much more flora and fauna than they could ever imagine. If that’s not enough, the Pacuare boasts 16 miles of accessible river runs so you can choose between day-long excursions and multi-day trips. A handful of genially-located eco-lodges along the route offer immersive and rather unforgettable jungle experiences. The Pacuare River is, without a doubt, Costa Rica’s best adrenaline rush.

Rio Balsa – Class II and III – Year-round

Located close to La Fortuna and the Arenal Volcano, the Balsa River is a very popular choice for two main reasons. Firstly, it’s the closest whitewater river to Costa Rica’s most coveted highlight and, secondly, it offers beginner-level rapids. The water-level of the Balsa is regulated by a damn which makes it also about the most reliable river in the region – if you’re at all apprehensive about trying out rafting and kayaking in Costa Rica, or are travelling with someone who is, trust the Balsa to offer an exciting yet not overwhelming experience. Overall, this river is the best options if you wish to try whitewater rafting or kayaking for the first time on a day-trip only. The moment you’re ready for a longer run and more exciting adventure, then upgrade to the Pacuare.

Rio Savegre – Class II and III – May to January

This relaxing whitewater river is another excellent option for families, with day-trips being varied and not too challenging. Alongside gentle rapids, you can also head off for walks to explore waterfalls and stop in enchanting swimming pools along the way. This free-flowing river is considered one of the clearest in all of Central America – if you’d love a relaxing river trip that’s just sprinkled with a few adrenaline-rushes, then the Savegre is perfect for you. This is one of the closest whitewater rivers to Manuel Antonio National Park.

Rio Tenorio – Class III and IV

Boasting some of the most thrilling Class IV rapids in the country, the Tenorio River is perfect for moderate and experienced rafters and kayakers. This is the biggest whitewater river in the northern Guanacaste region, originating from the mountains around the Tenorio Volcano. The deeply-carved canyon is breathtaking and, between the thrilling rapids, you’ll have plenty of chances to soak up the startling scenery.

Rio Sarapiqui – Class III and IV rapids – Year-round

Starting from the Cordillera Central, the Sarapiqui River runs from central highlands of Costa Rica, all the way to the border with Honduras. The river’s edges and crystalline waters are especially replete with exotic wild and marine life, making the gentler rapids (ideal for families and beginners) particularly rewarding. When you raft and kayak at a slower pace, you’ll have more time (and chances) to admire the surrounding landscapes. Which Costa Rica Peninsula Is Right for You? A Quick Comparison

Nicoya Peninsula is best for families, honeymooners, surfers, yoga travelers and first-time visitors to Costa Rica. Budget options are plentiful. Amongst the many exciting outdoor activities on offer in Costa Rica, zip-lining would have to be the most popular and, without a doubt, the most iconic. Flying like a bird along the canopy of a pristine forest is not just an exciting activity but also grants you a superb view of the country’s wilderness, one you’d otherwise never get to experience. Yet as popular as the sport is, in our neck of the woods, there are still many first-time visitors who don’t know what zip-lining in Costs Rica entails. Is zip-lining in Costa Rica safe? Age restricted? It is difficult and scary?

We thought we’d compile this guide to zip-lining in Costa Rica, so you can come and fly high, the Pura Vida way, and enjoy the absolute adventure vacation of a lifetime, in one of the world’s most welcoming countries.

What Exactly IS Zip-lining and How Did It Evolve?

Zip-lining or ‘flying fox’ as an adventure sport was first introduced in Costa Rica over four decades ago and, although now available all over the world, our humble little nation is still regarded the trailblazer of the trend. Historical records show that the use of a diagonal rope to transport goods and people across uneven terrain (across canyons or rivers) has been in use for well over 400 years in several continents (most especially in very mountainous regions) although the identity of the genius who first came up with the idea is still unknown. By the 1980’s, zip-lining was extensively used in Latin America by researchers studying dense tropical rain forests and their elusive wildlife so it’s no surprise to know that the first ‘recreational’ commercial course, aimed at the sheer fun of it all, was first opened in Costa Rica 1992.

Zip-lining involves completing a suspended-line course interspersed with platforms at strategic points. The aim is to use gravity as a force of movement, so you glide along the line rather than be driven along by some kind of mechanical apparatus, with the incline and your weight determining your speed.

The popularity of zip-lining in Costa Rica also reflects the eco-friendly benefit of this activity, when compared to so many others, given the low ecological impact it creates in a pristine wilderness environment. Zip-lining allows visitors access (and a bird’s eye view) to some of the most remote and unspoiled terrain of all, the only impact being the initial building of each platform and the occasional access to maintain it. But it still avoids the impact of having tens of thousands of people trample on the forest floor daily and that’s a huge plus for mother nature. This was the primary reason biologists first used the system in Costa Rica and its evolution into the tourism sector has been a very organic one, for obvious reasons.

Can Anyone Do It?

You bet! Zip-lining in Costa Rica is popular with honeymooning couples, retirees on vacation, singles, families and everyone in between. Every course specifies difficulty rating and duration, so you can choose the one that suits you best. Many tours do involve a bit of walking between platform so, no matter your age, you should still be fit and agile enough to complete a course. This is the absolute quintessential adventure activity in Costa Rica, something every active traveler really should try when visiting.

Is It Dangerous?

When used correctly, incorporating the right galvanized cables, with loads and breaks at the right distance, zip-lining is exceptionally safe, each course able to load tens of thousands of pounds at any given time. If, however, you suffer vertigo or simply scare easily, then you may want to keep your feet on the ground. It’s worth noting that there’s a multitude of zip-lining courses in Costa Rica that are quite mellow – even suitable for children above a certain age – with short sections that never allow you to pick up any great speed. Yep, there are plenty of ‘trial runs’ you can do if you’re keen to try it out first and see if you like it – no need to go all gung-ho right off the bat if you’re hesitating.

What Should You Wear When Zip-lining In Costa Rica?

If you’ve ever been abseiling, you’d immediately understand what’s needed for zip-lining: comfortable non-slip shoes, and versatile pants (preferably long or up to your knees as a minimum) and T-shirts that are neither too tight nor too lose. Stretchy fabrics that allow you a full range of motion are best. You also don’t want to go for thick fabrics – and you wouldn’t want to in Costa Rica anyway – so the harness, which goes around your legs and bottom, can be rightly adjusted. ‘When zip-lining in Costa Rica, ensure you have comfortable clothing and shoes on, pin an excited smile on your face and you can look forward to one of the best adrenaline rushes in the world!

Anything Else You Should Know About Zip-lining In Costa Rica?

Yes! Tie up your hair in a bun or better still braid it if it’s long, don’t pack your phone or any other valuables in your pockets (store them safely beforehand), make sure your camera (which you can bring along) has a wrist strap and attachment. The trail is often closed due to safety reason and if it happens during your vacation, do not panic: Costa Rica boasts nearly 70 volcanic peaks, only half a dozen of which are active. When locals tell you ‘there’s a volcano nearby you can climb’, trust them that they mean it – there’s an option here in every province. Uber-famous Arenal is the most active in the country (and arguably the world) and the resulting fertility of the soil is what makes hiking here so rewarding. Even if you can’t (or don’t wish to) reach the peak, it almost doesn’t matter – go volcano climbing in Costa Rica and you’ll be spending your hours meandering through some of the lushest, wildlife-enriched national parks on the planet. Float through the clouds in the Monteverde Cloud Forest

A magical playground for young and old alike, Monteverde is one of the most distinctive pockets of wilderness in Costa Rica. You can explore it at length on foot, by following the trail traversing the park, which includes half a dozen dreamy floating bridges, the longest of which spans just a few steps shy of 1000 feet. Getting lost in the cloud-drenched forests here is a truly magical experience, with aerial trams aiding families with very young kids. There are also ‘reserves within the reserve’ to visit, a particularly rewarding one being CuriChanca because it has a great density of wildlife but usually sees far fewer tourists. Most visitors just head up to this high-set forest for a single day but if you can squeeze in a longer visit, you’ll absolutely love exploring off the beaten trail. Monteverde has had a very interesting history and boasts a few clusters of lovely lodges and great restaurants, as well as an ethereal Butterfly Forrest, a Bat Jungle, Frog Pond and – most impressive of all – night walks to spot nocturnal wildlife. If you’d love to be totally immersed in wilderness for a few days then Monteverde is absolutely ideal – it has everything you need without the mega malls and mega resorts you might not.

Enjoy wildlife-watching galore in Corcovado National Park

Let’s get one thing straight: any adventure vacation in Costa Rica is bound to include some form of wildlife-watching event, simply because this is one of the most biodiverse nations on earth. So what would happen if you visited THE most bio-diverse corner of THE most bio-diverse country? You get a wildlife bonanza! Corcovado, the crown jewel of the Osa Peninsula, is remote, wild, spellbinding and, thanks to a convenient regional airport, also easy to visit in just a one-week vacay. The most commonly spotted animals in Corcovado are gloriously colorful macaws, capuchin monkeys, anteaters and tapirs although the park’s most revered residents – large cats like pumas and jaguars – are what everyone comes to see. Snorkel and SCUBA dive amidst world-class reefs and hammerhead sharks at Cocos Island

Cocos Island is one of Costa Rica’s most precious UNESCO-listed treasures and considered one of the world’s best diving destinations. Floating a few hundred miles offshore in the Puntarenas Province, Cocos attracts avid divers from all over the world, many of whom merely use San Jose as a springboard to their diving trip. Fervently protected by the government and home to an insane concentration of marine life around its shores, Cocos is astonishingly beautiful.
