Hidden within a forest reserve only half an hour away from us here in Turrialba, lies one of the finest birdwatching lodges in Central America – Rancho Naturalista.
Over 450 species of birds have been recorded in the immediate vicinity, and several species of hummingbird alone can often be seen directly from the balcony of the main lodge, where you also have great view of the distant smoking Turrialba volcano.
Violet-crowned Woodnymphs, White-necked Jacobins, Green Hermits, Green Thorntails, Violet Sabrewings, Bronze-tailed Plumeleteers and Green-crowned Brilliants for example, are all frequent visitors.
Known for its friendly atmosphere and delicious gourmet food too, Rancho Naturalista is a haven for birders, photographers, and naturalists.
There are fifteen comfortable rooms of varying size, all within, or next to the main lodge where guests tend to gather at the end of the day to share stories, and relax in time for a family style meal.
There are numerous guided tours with experts, or you can take to the trails yourself for a sense of real adventure.
In addition to the birdwatching scene, other activities can also be organised, such as hyperbaric oxygen sessions, massage, sugar mill tours, butterfly garden tours, Spanish lessons, dancing lessons, horseback riding, coffee tours, Zumba dance classes, painting classes, cooking classes, swimming in mountain streams, rafting, canyoning and zip lining.
The birdwatching, natural environment and the warm hospitality are what truly sets this ranch apart from the rest.
