Guides and Staff

Jane (New Zealand) and Fraser (Scotland) Tyrrell - owners of Costa Rica Rios, have a background of travel and adventure. Coming from different sides of the globe they both set out backpacking at a young age, travelling through the different continents until they eventually met by chance, while working in the Caribbean, several years ago. Always looking for a life less ordinary, they found Costa Rica Rios and decided to head over to Costa Rica to check it out. After falling in love with the country and being totally inspired by the business they decided to make Costa Rica home. They continue providing fantastic trips and service, and are excited to expand the company so many more people can experience the magic of CR.

Deivis Montenegro
Hailing from the countryside around Turrialba, Deivis brings a wealth of knowledge of all things Costa Rican to Costa Rica Rios. Combine that with his exceptional kayaking and guiding skills and he is a true asset to our Week of Rivers and Week of Adventures tours. Deivis also enjoys mountain biking, and paddling in his spare time. Deivis has twice represented Costa Rica in the World Rafting Championships, the most recent held near Turrialba in October, 2012. Deivis is also a good dancer and enjoys sharing his moves on our "salsa and merengue nights".

Daniel Rodriguez Daniel's mother worked in tourism since he was a kid, so outdoors and conservation have always been very important for him. Orginally from San Jose, Daniel started rafting at age 12, going to the Reventazon, Pacuare and Corobici rivers. Later he moved to the US and lived and worked there for 5 years and now speaks perfect english. Daniel brings a lot of fun to the tours and is a wonderful guide on both of Costa Rica Rios' Week of Rivers and Week of Adventures tours. When he is not working he enjoys all adrenaline/outdoors activities, especially surfing, skate boarding, kayaking and rappeling.

David Findley
Born in Madison, WI, USA, David always felt the calling for something a little more adventurous than what his hometown had to offer.  During a rafting trip in Peru at the age of 13 he discovered that whitewater would answer that calling; it is now an integral part of his life, always directing him to new locations, experiences, and people.  He began kayaking the rivers of the Midwest as a young teenager but truly began to expand his whitewater horizons at the age of 18 when he headed west for schooling and, yes, of course, better boating.  He has now been a commercial raft guide and safety kayaker for 5 years, running some of the most beautiful and challenging rivers that California has to offer. He is returning to Costa Rica for the second straight year for another season full of thrilling rivers and the opportunity to spread the excitement and happiness that his life’s passion offers.

Stef McArdle
Originally from Ottawa, Canada, Stef got into the whitewate scene as a canoe tripping guide in Northern Quebec and fell in love with it. She then got hooked on kayaking and rafting in 2007, and has been working on the Ottawa river each summer since then, guiding, instructing both canoeing and kayaking and sharing her passion with others. She has split her winters between Canada and sunnier destinations such as Mexico, Chile, and Ecuador to paddle and explore (and continue to work on her Spanish!) and loves the adventure and people she meets. Stef is a competitive athlete when she finds the time, most recently coming home a Pan American Rafting Champion, as well as competing in both Canada and Finland's National Ringette Leagues.

Julian Tisato
Growing up in Argentine Patagonia Julian has always had a love for rivers and mountains. But it was after kayaking the Futaleufu River in Chile at the age of 17 that Julian’s true passion for whitewater emerged. Since then Julian has worked full time as a River Guide in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Zambia, Argentina and Chile. Julian is a skilled river guide, canoer and kayaker and is also highly trained in Wilderness First Aid and Swiftwater Rescue. As an instructor and a multi-sport guide, Julian’s positive attitude, high energy and attention to detail always make him a favorite of his guests. To this date, his love for whitewater has taken him down more than 50 different rivers with big plans for many more! When Julian is not paddling waterfalls or guiding trips he likes to cook pizza for his wife and work on the designs for the lodge they are building in Argentina.

Marielos Fallas
Marielos is in charge of our our B&B's facilities and guest rooms. Born in Turrialba, she is a mother of three children and two grand children. She worked six years for Ray Mclain, and now also has seven years working for Costa Rica Rios. Marielos enjoys the teamwork at the B&B and is always willing to help out when and where necessary. She especially enjoys the rewards of seeing clients happy and with a smile on their face all week with CRR.

Lucy
All our Bed and Breakfast dinners are cooked by our fabulous cook, Lucy. Lucy loves to provide hearty, healthy meals, using the best of local ingredients and a variety of Costa Rican and international flavours. You will be spoilt by the high quality of meals and friendly atmosphere at the dinner table each night. Lucy has lots of restaurant experience in Turrialba and is an asset to our team.

Alex McArdle
Alex is a seasonal intern at Costa Rica Rios working both in the office and coordinating logistical aspects of the adventure holidays. She is on a year hiatus from Dalhousie University where she is studying Sustainability and Environmental Sciences. An avid traveler, she leapt at the opportunity to explore the incredible biodiversity in Costa Rica, improve her whitewater skills on some of the best rivers in the world and live with her sister, a guide with the company, in Central America.
