Here I am two days back home after an amazing time in Costa Rica, yet somehow it feels like I never left. So here's a note of gratitude for a wonderful week of adventures. I didn't have a chance to leave my comments on Friday night, as I planned to do so on Saturday morning before breakfast, but I was too tempted to walk around town to take in one last look of Turrialba, the inspiring view of the Volcano and adjacent hills surrounding the B&B. I felt that had to take in the scenery one last time, making a mental picture of this little bit of paradise that you now call home and that I feel blessed to have experience myself even for just eight glorious days. So here's an email instead to voice my appreciation and praise to the entire Costa Rica Rios Team for a job well done (if you still want me to fill out your questionnaire, feel free to send it to me). You made us all feel so very welcome, providing us with a true home away from home - taking care of us from day 1 as we arrived in San Jose, feeding our bodies and souls with good food, warmth and hospitality to the very end of the trip. I know I'm echoing everybody in our group when I say that you have certainly made it very hard for us NOT to want to return to CR for more unforgettable experiences!
Cudos to Danny, Davis and the rest of the "river gang" for making it look so easy to manage a group of 10 eager people of various phisical activity levels both in and out of the water! Myself, I'm very grateful for having felt totally safe in the capable hands of our local guides while being introduced to kayaking for the first time. I know I would not have jumped in that ducky as eagerly as I did on that last fun-filled kayaking day on the Pejibaye, if it wasn't for having seen the guys "in action" on the Rio Pecuare in the days prior. Their camaraderie is hard to miss and their thrill-seeking zest for life is quite contagious - true assets when combined with their exceptional kayaking/rafting skills (and surprising culinary skills!) and their knowledge of the area as locals. What a difference it made for us to be able to just follow and enjoy ourselves knowing we were in the best of hands. Having been fished out of the water and "rescued" as quickly and as skillfully as I was when I did manage to fall in twice - I can honestly say that, although it may have been only gentle II/III class rapids, for a novice to the sport like myself it was thrilling enough to get me hooked. All I wanted to do was to get back on that ducky to continue to experience the river and take in the exotic sounds and scenery of the abounding nature surrounding us. But alas it ended all too soon... and it was time to leave it all behind.
I came to CR looking for an adrenaline packed vacation, an escape from a stressful year at a new job and a much needed R&R for my body and soul. But what I left with is so much more: memories to last a lifetime and a love of a beautiful country and its welcoming and peaceful people. Landing at EWR on Saturday night, I completely felt displaced - something I never really experienced before during my prior travels. I've sometimes returned back home a little melancholy at the end of a vacation or year abroad, but always happy to return home nonetheless to the blessings of my life, my family and friends here in the US. But as I looked at the NYC skyline in the cab on the way home, I actually felt a pang in my heart, almost not recognizing what should have been familiar to me. And as I searched for the plush, green tropical hills of CR, I actually felt, and still do feel, displaced among the high-rise buildings of the populated NYC-metro area. Waking up these last two days to unseasonably cool and foggy morning weather here in NJ, I actually felt I was still waking up in CR, even if for just for a moment. To me this is a true statement to the powerful beauty of the country I just left behind and the impression its people and culture have left on me. But most of all it is a compliment to the work of your amazing and dedicated team. It truely makes a difference when you are in the company of people that are passionate about what they do. Your team's love and commitment for Turrialba is what makes me want to return to this special part of the world.
So thank you for providing a fantastic trip. It was a pleasure meeting you both, your beautiful little boys and Team. Not having had the chance to properly say goodbye to some of the guys - especially Davis and Walter (somehow on Friday on the Pejibaye it didn't register that we were not going to see them again that same night in the B&B) - please extend my thanks to them as well. Who knows, if I manage to get more time in the water here in NJ/NYC, I might return to experience one of your Week of Rivers one day! ;-)
